Your 85 f1.8 is one of the best portrait lenses around. No need for you to buy the hugely expensive f1.2 version.

However, the key is to learn to use your lens wide open. On forums of this sort hobbyists are constantly gassing about optimum aperture. Forget about that. Shoot at f1.8. Get used to manually focussing your lens. Get used to having at least one eye sharp. Have fun.

A good way to practice focussing is to focus on your TV screen as you're watching your favorite show. Check on the back of the camera to see if you nailed it. Do this over and over. Then delete all those useless pictures. Practice focusing on other stuff in your living room as you watch TV. Check and delete as well. Eventually you will get the hang of it.
