Handheld BIF Photography Recs Using 7D & 400mm F/5.6

I have been using my Canon 7D for a year now and just ordered a Canon 400mm F/5.6 lens for closer & sharper BIF photography. My current subject is a pair of osprey at our city park that have been fishing successfully for about 10 days. I plan on shooting handheld in M mode with AI Servo, partial metering, AF point expansion in early morning or late afternoon  sunlight or partly cloudy conditions.  I would appreciate any recommendations on shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure compensation, etc to get sharp photos with this non IS lens.
