Let me clarify that: Other than the K-7, Pentax sensors have always been top-notch.

Compared to sensors from contemporary cameras by other makers I'd say they've all been top-notch including the K-7 (which was a decent match for the D300, just not the advance over the K20 that we hoped for) but excluding the K10, whose VPN meant that it was often tricky over ISO400 even in decent light.

IIRC, the competition for the K20D was the D300 and 50D. By the time the K-7 came out, competition was stiffer due to the release of the 7D and D300S.

The K10D matches for the competition (40D and D200) according to DXOMark, and the body went the extra mile with weather-resistance.

All academic now, of course.

Yes, ancient history. I just didn't want to leave too much room for Pentax bashers to call me a fanboy.
