Supposedly IBIS achieves almost the same improvement as OIS, but maybe it's something like 3 stops vs. 4 stops. Certainly not a world of difference. I really don't think many people hand-hold a 500mm lens without any support, such as a monopod, a beanbad, a car window, etc. If you are wobbling a 500mm enough that you are almost completely off target, no IS is going to help much. I do know that I was able to get decent shots at times with a 500mm mirror lens and IBIS, when I was sitting down with my elbows braced against my legs, using a shutter speed far slower than 1/FL.
