Sorry, do you mean that the older Sigmas have the same flatness or they don't?

With respect to on screen viewing, it's not a fair fight to compare Foveon and Bayer at 100%. Generally Bayer sensors have more pixels than equivalent generation Foveons and they need them too.  That means to get a fair representation you need to upsample the Foveon to the same size as Bayer and compare then. Alternatively you can downsample the Bayer although that risks throwiing away data.

Best of all is compare prints where you have a level playing field.

I mean that the older Sigma/Foveon cameras also show, in my opinion, an ABSENCE of flatness, ie that subjects have an apparent roundess, a 'verisimilitude' as Pete Spader calls it,  to the real 3-dimensional subject. Yes, the 3D quality we've all argued about for years... with the older cameras as well as the Merrill sensor. My vote for the reason why is with the quality of the edges, the single pixel capture which leads to good microcontrast on the single pixel level. The super sharpness of the DP2Merrill also plays into the good image quality of course.

As to upsampling, what's "fair" and who really cares?  I can put the magnification in various %s and still see the Sigma version looks 'better' than the Bayer version.

Best regards, Sandy
