Canon and Nikon are pretty evenly matched. Certainly, you could never look at a photo and determine whether it was taken by either camera!  I think you should go with the system that 'feels' right for you.  Personally, I use Nikon because I do a lot of night sports photography, and their cameras have held a steady edge in high ISO 'quality'.  That has narrowed significantly, however.  And for travel, I have to say I don't even take my DSLR's anymore. I've switched to M43 and love it. I get so many more pictures when I have a tiny camera in my pocket.  Just my $0.02.
