Joe,

The mathematics of deconvolution is way over my head, so I will not attempt to describe it other than to say that it is a deblurring process.  Blurring can occur because of motion, improper focusing or the effects of an anti-aliasing filter.  See my previous post for a list of some of the programs that offer deconvolution sharpening.
