would i benefit from a longer hood?

Your pick of the shorter lens-hood should be fine. A longer hood is always better, but it depends on the lens as well - not all lenses are as susceptible to flare and ghosting as others. Something, shielding oncoming light with your hand will do the trick.

A 50mm lens hood can easily extend over one inch away from the front lens element, the FOV is not that wide.

The 3-section rubber type is more convenient, but you have to like it. Also, as it gets wider, it should be longer, ie. bulkier.
