Additional to what mako2011 has been saying: I use landscape picture control and I like the colors it gives. Also try using -.3 stops exposure compensation to get better contrast.

I generally don't use d-lighting and have it set to off, I only use that in specific circumstances.

Use higher arpetures around f8. I also have lens corrections turned off, because vignetting copensation flattens everything.

make sure you use high enough shutter speeds, I don't go much below 1/250 anymore, unless I would be doing a long exposure and possibly might use a tripod.

You miss too much by not shooting raw, the capabilities in raw with that sensor are astonishing, you can push up shadows in a way that will beat all your expectations.
