Believe me, I have plenty of external hard drives.

I'm curious if my practice of "keep everything" is common or if it would be helpful for me to get over my obsessive hoarding.

I keep everything - I rarely shoot raw, and I do have external drives, automatically backed up.  Scans of shots I took back in 1958/9 (Contaflex & B&W 35mm film) have recently been published in a book about intelligence gathering in Germany, post WWII.  My problem is annotation, but by annotating all folders, I manage.  At the moment, my memory is still doing a fair job!

If you were to take a series of photos (whether family gather, landscape, or anything else), after you've decided which one is the best, do you typically throw the others away?  Which would you keep?

As above, I keep all - it's amazing how scenery, buildings, as well as peoples' faces change.
