Sony must have asked themselves the same question, because it has been removed in recent models. But the answer is that it used to inform you when you were really shaky or not so shaky so you could make a decision about how to proceed.

Yeah, I really miss that scale (A550) giving an indication of how shaky you are at the moment. On the A77 it is not present.

And to answer the question, you don't see the effect of steady shot in the EVF. It does work, but only right before capture.

But for video there is electronic stabilization, and that effect you will see in the EVF.
