With subject isolation, more is usually better and just gives you more options.  When I'm shooting soccer, I don't get to carefully set up each shot at the distance I want with the background I want.  I stand where I'm allowed to and I shoot the action where it is and a large aperture lens gives me more and better options.  If Nikon had a 200-400 f/2.8, I'd rather have it instead of f/4 (even though it would be quite heavy).
