Hi

I have just bought an oly XZ-2. I currently use a fairly old 16 Gb class 6 SD card.

I shoot raw and I have noticed that the buffer takes several seconds to empty.

What card do I need to buy ? Will any class 10 card enough ? I know the throughput can be very different (even for class 10) but I'm not sure it will make any different with this camera.

This question applies to all recent cameras with BSI CMOS sensors and fast processors to match, particularly if you also do video.

Generally, the write speed is determined by BOTH the camera and the card.

I have two Sandisk Extreme SDHC cards. One claims 20 MB/s, the other claims 45 MB/s Class 10. I also have a Lexar PLATINUM II SDHC Class 10 card.

My SZ-30MR does not have RAW, but I do a lot of HD720p video, so both write speed and download times do matter to me.

With prices on SDHC cards having halved between 2011 and 2013, I am going invariably for the fastest I can get, precisely because the card is still a substantial proportion of the cost of the camera ownership. None of my SD type cards have died on me, so they are a one-time purchase.

As to reliably, my Lexar card seemed to hiccup when first put to use. I did a long format in the laptop, after which the camera was happy with it. The Sandisk cards never give me any trouble.

All my three cards are 16 Mega Bytes. Normally I need just one for any occasion, but every year I take part in a week of (Morris) dancing, where I typically fill two cards and a half.
