My wife (who is Chinese) and I have just come back from China and can assure you that the geo-tagging on my 6D works there and was accurate even in the village she comes from which is about an hour north of the nearest city.  I think you just need to use your discretion in using it there and turn it off if you think you may be in a sensitive area where you would be foolish to photograph anyway.  I also found Google Maps and the much maligned Apple Maps both worked ok on my iPhone and all the directions I put in there got me to my destination.  The only thing I found that didn't work was Google Earth which I think must be blocked as I can view China back home in Australia.
