I notice a big discrepancy in the weight of these two monitors – so, would it be correct to assume they are not both E-IPS?  Is this pointless to question really?  The Dell is like 13lbs and the Asus is over 20lbs.

I guess I’m questioning if it’s a huge mistake to blow $300 on an ‘IPS’ monitor that’s only going to really be a 6 bit panel to view/edit the 14 bit RAW files out of my camera – which is why I started paying more attention to the bit depth in the first place and started looking at IPS monitors.

Prad.de does not think all that highly of the ASUS PA248Q;  they rate is as "Satisfactory" in a scale of....

Very Good (I've not seen higher than this)

Good

Satisfactory

Adequate

Btw... the Dell U2412M was rated as "Good".

The review is only available in German at this time but Google Translate or similar should help you get useful info.

As to your concerns over pseudo 8bit (6bit+AFRC) vs true 8bit, almost all IPS panel monitors under $400 will use the 6bit+AFRC system.  If you read enough reviews on TFT Central or Prad you will see that issues with banding or other artifacts are minimal wih the new AFRC method of simulating an 8bit color depth.  Good enough for the hobbyist image editor.

PS.... if you want a 24" sRGB monitor with good specs, check out the new NEC P242w.  It's more than $400 though!
