Let there be light!
Apr 18, 2013

Hi guys,

I'm looking for an 30 or 35mm lens which will give me low noise and sharp results handheld in low light without using a flash.

I currently own the sigma 30mm which I love, but I'd like more low light performance. I was thinking about the sony 50mm 1.8 which gathers more light and adds OSS. I was not sure if it would like it's fov so I bought a manual canon fd 50mm 1.4 to try it out first.

I found out I generally don't like to work at 50mm. Also while it's low light performance at 1.4 is very good, it's difficult to get sharp images. I'm not sure wether this is due to the lens performance wide open, or the lack of OSS at 50mm.. this results in higher shutter speeds which  make it's large aperture less useful..

I'm considering the sony 35mm 1.8 with OSS, but I'm very curious what you guys think of the combi sigma 35mm 1.4 (http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sigma-35mm-f1-4-dg-hsm/5) and a metabones speedbooster (http://www.dpreview.com/articles/2667195592/first-impressions-metabones-speed-booster)

I know this is way more pricey than the sony, but would this make sense given what I'm looking for (I don't mind I have to manually focus)? That combi would lack OSS (is that even a concern at 35 mm?) but would give an equivalent of F1.0?
