Thank you for an excellent post. I am a pixel peeper (that's part of the reason why I want to upgrade to D7100 from m4/3) so I will take the best possible IQ for my money.  The only concern that I have about 70-300 is that the largest aperture on it is very slow (f4.5).

My plan is that if I get 70-300 VR, then I will later pick up either Sigma 17-50 f2.8 or Sigma 17-70 C lens.

I just did a recent side by side real world comparison between those two very lenses.

For me, I don't compromise IQ where possible.. so for me the decision was simple. Keep my 70-300VR

The 18-200 and 70-300 as compared

Shots and lenses are as follows:

1- 18-200 f5.6 at 200mm

1- 18-200 f5.6 at 200mm 100% Crop

2 - 70-300 f5.3 at 200mm 100% Crop

2 - 70-300 f5.3 at 200mm

3 - 18-200 f5.6 at 200mm

3 - 18-200 f5.6 at 200mm 100% Crop

4 - 70-300 f5.3 at 200mm 100% Crop

4 - 70-300 f5.3 at 200mm

5 - 18-200 f8 at 200mm

5 - 18-200 f8 at 200mm 100% Crop

6 - 70-300 f8 at 200mm 100% Crop

6 - 70-300 f8 at 200mmThe 18-200VR 2 does reasonably well at the center, but it's when you wander towards the borders that's when the super zooms fail. Having said that, of all the super zooms that I've had, the 18-200 has done the best at the higher FL's at the center. It also does very well at maintaining color contrast when compared to the other Nikkor (18-300) and the non Nikkors. I'm somewhat of a detail freak, and I've decided to keep my 18-105 / 70-300 combo, and just swap out lenses when required. Others who are not so fussy find happiness with these super zooms.
