I have both the 18-200 VRII and the 70-300 VR.  In the range where these two overlap, the 70-300 VR is decisevely superior optically.  It also focuses better than the 18-200 VRII.  The 70-300 VRII is a true "cheap" sports lens.  However, the 18-200 VRII does quite well at the shorter end, and I appreciate having one.  However, I would favor considering the 16-85 VRII as your first kit lens, if you can afford it.  (Yesterday Amazon listed it for $600, which is lower than recent norms.)  I prefer the 16-85 for landscapes and the 18-200 for candids.

If you can afford getting the 70-300 VR at a discount through the promotion, and then buy a 16-85 VRII separately, you have the most range for the buck in proven performers.

Good luck!

I hope this helps.

Fred
