The original GRD's jpeg engine produced black and white images that gave it cult status.  Many GRD users prefer the look of the original's black and whites to succeeding generations.  My first GRD was the III, and I was quite disappointed with its jpegs.  ISO 400 and over was smeary mush, so I was so glad when Lightroom supported the raws.  Now I am totally used to raw processing and consider it a natural part of the workflow, so any shortcomings in jpeg processing aren't a point for me.  All I care about in that regard is how soon and how well Lightroom processes the GR dngs.
