I bought a D800E only because the shop didn't have a "plain" D800 in stock..

Matt Kloskowski made that assessment in Oct. 2012. I think he was behind the times then, and even more so now. The uncertainty about the D800E he refers to was probably the moiré fear that Nikon fueled with their web warning. That furor has died down as moiré has not turned out to be a major issue.

Nikon's released the D7100 without an OLPF will further dispel any phobias against the D800E and make the D800 seem a little more anachronistic.

Another positive for the D800E resale value is scarcity. Nikon has been making more D800 than D800E, so the supply of used D800 is likely to be greater than for D800E.
