Well, there always has to be a dissenting opinion.

Just to be clear: I would probably not use 17.5mm for a dedicated portrait shoot.

But I use it for documentary situations, including unposed candid portraits of the subjects.

Well, OK, maybe also for the occasional posed portrait, like this one, with no other light source than the flames:
