Why do older camera lenses have faster F-stops?

Yeah, an informal test on an old manual lens, it seems that focusing is easier at larger apertures and you have more room for error.

I wonder if possibly another factor is that AF might not be as capable of as fine focusing control. When I've set my digital lens on MF mode, it simply doesn't feel as precise as a manual lens, and it doesn't feel like you have as much fine control.
