If you are looking for one prime, and want to do portraits of kids, then the Oly 45mm f1.8 is a wonderful lens. Very cheap, relatively speaking, fast and with wonderful bokeh. It lives on my EPL3 about 80% of the time

Coming from a compact camera, the quality of the bokeh (the fuzziness) also just blows me away:
