I don't think it's the speedlights. Your first shot appears to be underexposed. If you want black to stand out, shoot it against a white or light gray neutral background. And equally important for product shots like this, learn how to post-process (setting white and black points, sharpening, etc).

EDIT: Also, clean the product thoroughly before shooting. This one looks rather grungy. You'll be surprised at how much crisper it will look if you clean the dirt and dust out of all the little grooves.
