Probably the reason why you do not have stable display but do have a stable output is that afaik olympus seems to stabilize the sensor at the point of shooting like on the E-3/E-5 dslr's

where as panasonic does ois optical image stabilizer, stabilizing a lens element before you shoot. This is how an optical stailized lens works.  But it draws a bigger current. This is also build into Canons IS and Nikons VR SLR lenses

The later does give you a much more relaxed image, sometimes you can toggle so that you can see what the IS effect does, did not find that option on the XZ-2,

both methods work pretty well in the end
