If Nikon  realized they had a fixable problem that could turn into a public relations nightmare.

It would depend on how much  it would take to adjust a production line  to accommodate a new shutter or mirror unit.   Change the nameplate  and change some software.

The last iPad was replaced after six months. Different plug, faster processor.

When the last Civic failed to excite,  Honda had a new refreshed design in production and available the next year.  It was debuting on car shows before the previous model was a year old.
