The 28 has no previous version I can see, except the 1.4D which is metal and heavier, the 18-35 has only grown fractionally, and the 70-200 f4 is lighter than the first 80-200 2.8 ED. as you say a move in the right direction, and nearly half the weight of the best 70-200.
