I have both lenses, I got my 18-200 back when I first purchased a D3100, and now I have a 16-85 on my D7100.

My first copy of the 16-85 was a poor one, so it went back to B&H, my second copy is sharper than my 18-200 from 16mm to about 60mm above 60mm the 18-200 is sharper and faster, and that is to be expected.  What you should think about is what focal length are you going to be shooting at most? If less than 70mm I would suggest the 16-85.  The 2mm shorter focal length really is noticeable, there have been times that I could not get a group shot of people because I could not go shorter than 18mm, I feel that had I had the 16-85 I would have been able to get a better shot.

Here are 2 examples of the 16-85 on my D7100, the first one I had to crop pretty heavy, but it's right out of the camera as a JPEG, the second photo I did some very minor PP with the Nikon software that came with the camera.

I will try to take some photos with both lenses this weekend to give you a back to back example.
