Re all the arguments about the purity of lens tests, it seems clear that the future is in in-camera corrections and lens design is quickly being sent in that direction.

Cameras increasingly function as part of the lens, no different than adding some magic glass element to the lens design. Nobody would insist that one of the elements should be removed to make the test "fair" to competing lenses!

The camera body is simply a means to hold all this stuff together in one handy little place and to allow for humans to interface with the lens "assembly".

At the extreme, even future cell phones will have so much power that their camera images will be technically perfect, unimaginatively sharp, with any aperture, speed, etc. selected. The lenses will be specialized, designed to gather and pass along light in the way future imagers will require to reliably organize it.

While it is interesting to know about the pure optical perfection of lenses, it is increasingly irrelevant to test many of the new lenses in the traditional way.
