Adding a SSD drive and memory to Dell XPS 8500 - looking for compatible brands on Amazon...
Apr 10, 2013

Hello,

I am buying a Dell XPS 8500 shortly with 8GB RAM and have decided to upgrade to 24 GB via adding 16 GB of RAM and adding an SSD with 256 GB.  I wanted to use crucial.com because they seem to have compatible stuff but I ended up being charged a lot extra for shipping (need it here fast) and also sales tax.  I am trying to use Amazon instead because of this.  Here are the 2 items I was looking at via crucial...

16GB kit (8GBx2), 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-12800 memory module

128GB Crucial m4 2.5" SSD w/ 3.5" Adapter Bracket

http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=AA74D86CA5CA7304

Via Amazon

Crucial m4 256GB 2.5-Inch (9.5mm) SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive CT256M4SSD2

http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-256GB-2-5-Inch-9-5mm-CT256M4SSD2/dp/B004W2JL2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365617847&sr=8-1&keywords=crucial+ssd

Which seems to be a similar drive, but I'm not sure as for the RAM:

Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB kit (8GBx2) DDR3-1600 1.5V 240-Pin UDIMM BLS2CP8G3D1609DS1S00

http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Ballistix-DDR3-1600-240-Pin-BLS2CP8G3D1609DS1S00/dp/B006YG9EEW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365618118&sr=1-1&keywords=crucial+16+GB+240+pin

or

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory F3-1600C9D-16GXM

http://www.amazon.com/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-240-Pin-Desktop-F3-1600C9D-16GXM/dp/B007GWMQ66/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365618193&sr=1-1&keywords=16+GB+240+pin

or

Corsair 16GB XMS3 (2x 8GB) DDR3 SDRAM 1600MHz 240-Pin 16 Dual Channel Kit DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) CMX16GX3M2A1600C11

http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-1600MHz-240-Pin-Channel-CMX16GX3M2A1600C11/dp/B006ZINK0S/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365618193&sr=1-9&keywords=16+GB+240+pin

I'm not 100% sure how to decide what memory to buy?  Also, is that crucial SSD above good or are these options better?  I have no idea how to figure this out - which is why I kind of wanted to use Crucial's site in the first place.

Other options for SSD drives:
Crucial m4 256GB 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s with Data Transfer Kit CT256M4SSD2CCA
http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-256GB-2-5-Inch-Transfer-CT256M4SSD2CCA/dp/B004W2JL84/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365618284&sr=1-3&keywords=ssd+256+gb

(Why is this one $20 more than the other 256GB SSD by crucial?)

I'm assuming this would allow me to plug in the SSD? Or where do you buy the screws @?

SILVERSTONE SDP08 3.5 to 2 X 2.5-Inch Bay Converter

http://www.amazon.com/SILVERSTONE-SDP08-3-5-2-5-Inch-Converter/dp/B002BH3Z8E/ref=pd_sim_e_1

I really appreciate the help.  I've found this site to be very helpful.
