Nex-6 & Background Focus Question

I was shooting some shots of people  in front of a building.  When the NEX-6 is in FINE mode for image quality thre is a menu item called Background Defocus. I could defocus the backgroup or keep it crisp.

Then I switched it over to RAW and also RAW+JPEG for the mode and that menu option is not available in RAW mode. I took some pictures of the same person and same building. In all my shots the background building is not in focus just the person. How do you fix this when shooting in RAW?  I was zoomed out, even stepped back to get more of the building and it kept blurring the building in the back.

Is there anotehr funtion or something in RAW that can do crisp background images with a portrait of someone in front of it?

Thanks,

Robert
