I'm not a professional baby photographer - but I'd like to suggest that you bounce your flash off a wall or ceiling - so as not to blind the baby with direct flash. Of course you'll want to time your session so that the subject is in a good mood - Mother will guide you there.

Can't imagine why a kit lens wouldn't be just fine.  What was the logic behind that?  The mysterious 'bokeh' perhaps?
