Wow, Ray and Ultimitsu... my head hurts. I tried to follow your debate, but gave up.

As a D300 and 17-55 user, I'm still not as good as this combo can deliver, so lab tests don't interest me for my practical purposes... Real world results do interest me. Having said that, if I were backpacking across this country's vast open spaces, I'd leave my D300 and 17-55 at home, and take my ancient D50 and a couple lightweight kit lenses (18-55 and 55-200) and maybe a 35/1.8 or older 35/f2 screw-drive, since the D50 has the built-in focus motor. Only 6 mp, but still manages good images if you expose accurately.

However, I'd probably strongly consider only taking  my Lumix point 'n shoot since it has manual controls, a fast lens, useful zoom range, wide enough to be useful, and has HD video, for those journaling moments. Not too expensive to break, very flexible for those moments you don't anticipate, and will fit in pocket or toss it in your backpack. Just bring a handful of 8 gig SD cards and a secure little waterproof case to stash them in. It's all you need for self discovery. Cheers.
