I am sure you will get the aperture issue solved, you already did it seems. Even without the problem you mention Pentax A lenses aperture rings are a bit clunky as compared to Pentax's earlier makes, but it's a really great performer you got for very little money.

The Vivitar will be a fun tool to learn with, but better hold the combination below the lens, not only on the camera. In case you keep it longer and use it e.g. for birding or such I'd try to find some collar with a tripod mount for it
