Shifting gears slightly.  I'm renting this lens for an upcoming trip.  Plan to use it for some landscape photography (distant subject, so the medium tele length should be perfect).

Assuming I'm shooting on a tripod, is there an optimum aperture for edge-to-edge sharpness?  I plan to shoot in "A" mode but want to pick the right aperture.  5.6?  8?  Doesn't diffraction begin to limit sharpness above f/8?

Thanks for any advice.

Only had the chance to use it once (a waste I know, it will be used tomorrow), but obviously the point of a lens like this is that it performs well wide open, and it goes a long way open in the first place.  Diffraction would appear by f8, yes.
I'd say, but from theory, not experience that it should be best between f2.8 and f5.6.

I found it pin sharp at f1.8 myself though (which is what I was shooting at here).
I should know better tomorrow.
