I own both a 77 and 99.  77 for Birds/BIF and where you need reach with my 70-300g lens.

Everything else seems much better with more clarity and 'pop' from the a99.

It gets the call almost all the time now.

I see a difference, in both shots on the 27" screen, my hdtv, and when I print.

I feel you cannot put the 99 in the same league as the 77.

And I am of the opinion you cannot appreciate the difference until you use the 99, there is  no way to nail down the comparison from marks or tests done by others.  In the end it's my eyes that count.
