John,

Both focus changes and position changes cause changes in the image size.

PS has an "auto-align layers" step that adjusts for that. If you keep everything else constant, it seems to do an excellent job of correcting for image size changes, as well as exposure changes between shots.

Dunno specifics about the other solutions out there like Helicon Focus, but they would have to handle image size changes and small movements in order to be useful.
