This has been a year since the OP wrote this, wonder what happened?  Felix123 has been silent.

I used my Sekonic light meter to verify both of my D800e's metering and exposures and they are spot on.  Also metered on a white, grey, and black target and verified the grey hit mid level on the histogram....it does.

If you don't have a meter, I would use the Sunny 16 rule and shot a grey card.  IMO, it works well to verify exposure and metering and is simple.
