70-200mm lens choices
Apr 7, 2013

I am trying to find a suitable 70-200 lens for me. One side the Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VR II attracts me. However the cost and weight is a concern(I am not a pro photographer and after carrying my friend's 70-200 with my D800 for a day gave me some impressions on the weight). The light weight of 70-200 F4 seems very attractive. With great high ISO cameras like D800 and D600, I can shoot at ISO 3200 and 6400 and get great results. In that case, I may not need the extra one stop of 70-200 F2.8 VR II. Then the 70-200 F2.8 VR II has an extra benefit of using as an excellent portrait lens.

Other options that I considered are the new Tamron 70-200 VC. I heard that it has some good reviews in Canon mount. Anyone tested it on Nikon D800? This might be a good compromise as it costs the same price as 70-200 F4 and weighs slightly less than 70-200 F2.8 VR II. Not sure how sharp it is ( also micro contrast, bokeh etc.)

If I am getting 70-200F4, I may need to add an 85mm F1.8 for portraits and then the price will be closer to 70-200 F2.8 VR II.

So I am confused which options to take. Any suggestions and comments are greatly appreciated.
