I remember a while back when someone took an original capture, and then decimated a copy with the Nearest Neighbor method, and fed both to Imatest, and Imatest reported the decimated version (IOW, the one with rows and columns of pixels stripped out of the image) as having higher resolution.  I'm afraid we might have a similar kind of folly here.
