99.99% of the 'external' drives will be pre-formatted for NTFS (Windows) so you'll need to go into Disk Utility and repartition it (if you want to use the same drive for both Mac and PC) into 2 partitions, one of them being FAT (for the PC) and the other being HFS+ Journaled for the Mac.  Once the other partition is in FAT, you can use the PC to re-do it into NTFS.
