"user error" -- I had just done a few in deep shade, and forgot to dial back the ISO.

I tend to be rather sloppy in "walk-around" mode...

No, this is really great - it shows what you can typically expect in realistic situations. With a lens like the 16-85 or any of the f4-5.6 consumer zooms, ISO 400 is very normal.  It keeps your shutter speeds high at decent apertures.  I typically use ISO 400 on walkaround, but not this time.
