I think an ND filter makes more sense in this case, there is very little response outside the red channel with a 720nm filter, which must be effectively cutting the resolution of the image way down.

I really wish someone outside of Leica would make a monochrome only camera. Preferably a full-spectrum monochrome only camera. I think the ideal would be something like a monochrome Fuji without XTrans, and with a retractable UV/IR cut filter in place of the density filter that is available on the X100/X100(s). Make something like that in an XE-1 or XPRO-1 and they own me.
