Newb Advice for Nikon D600

I have a D90 and it has served me well.  I'm using a Sigma zoom with it but it's a slow lens.  I'm law enforcement and we have used a D700 for a while and has been excellent for crime scene photography.  When the D600 came out I began looking into it and I believe that is what I'm going to purchase within a week.

I mostly shoot general purpose - kids and lots of mountain scenes in all 4 seasons so snow and glare are always something I'm concerned about.

I'm VERY much a newb compared to most of you on the forum.  I have a budget of about 4k and was wondering what D600 and lens combo(s) for landscapes and general family shooting you would recommend?  From what I can gather I don't see a step up to the D800 as being very beneficial to me...but maybe I'm wrong.  So here I am posting looking for advice.

Open to any suggestions....

Thanks in advance.
