Ring around the beauty dish
Apr 3, 2013

Recently bought a 22 inch beauty dish that can accept speedlights with a special bracket, although the dish is not specifically designed for speedlights. I've noticed that when using the dish without the sock or grid on the front, there is a visible bright ring around the main lit area, I believe this is because the speedlight head can "see" around the disc that is meant to block light, so angled light from the head shoots out directly and creates this ring effect. I tried zooming the head and moving the deflector disc closer to the head, but nothing completely removes this effect except for using the grid, which blocks all angled light.

Is this a common problem using speedlights in beauty dishes?
