I haven't read through the entire thread, so forgive me if it's been mentioned already: a good way to improve IQ when taking pictures of images in low light is averaging several to many identical images. Take a tripod, compose your shot, take as many images as you want, and then superimpose them in, say, Photoshop. The signal-to-noise ratio goes up with the square root of the number of shots taken. Very effective. Used all the time in astrophotography, but museum photography is another prime application here.
