My Wife is a native Spanish speaker, and in the past has asked me questions about why some words dont "follow the rules" - sometimes I know why, often I dont.

The biggest reason for this is that English in all forms, is a combo of a Germanic language and French (thanks to William the Conqueror).  It wasn't until I read Ivanhoe as an adult that I realized that all our animal names (pig, deer, cow etc) are Anglo-Saxon words while the meat (pork, venison, beef) are from the French, because the conquered people raised the animals while the conquerors ate the meat.  Since then English has become very flexible about adding new words from just about every language its speakers encountered.
