why not - if the 100-400 will get a premium price tag Canon has to justify that - and I am almost convinced that with the presence of mid range quality 70-300 L a high quality 100-400 L would get some extra features - otherwise the motivation to buy it might be very limited.

Walking in the shoes of the Canon marketing people it makes no sense to add some 100 mm and keep the optical quality and feature set of the 70-300 L. Who would buy it for double the price?

But if Canon would make a really good 100-400 mm f/4.x - f/5.6 IS lens the 400 f/5.6 might become obsolete and Canon could charge some 3.x k USD or so for the lens. Mode 3 IS would be one of the features that could justify such a price tag.

I don't expect Canon will make a new 100-400L that will be above the new Nikkor 80-400 in terms of features and price, certainly not a zoom that ends in f/5.6.

There is no doubt that an update of the 100-400L would be a great lens, but nothing more than what the 70-300L offers. That's one of the reasons why I don't know if Canon is at all interested in updating it anytime soon. It would simply be a 70-300L with 100mm extra. Great, but difficult to justify a Nikkor-like pricetag over the 70-300L.

As for the 400/5.6 becoming obsolete... I personally would always want a prime to compliment a zoom like the 100-400L. A prime will always be lighter, sharper and focus faster.

Currently everything is pure speculation of courseĀ

If a New 100 - 400 would be similar in optical performance compare to the 70-300L and only 100 mm longer not many would buy it - fully agree and thus it would not make much Sense for Canon

if it should become a hige success it should be on the optical performance of the 400 f/5.6 or course
