In Linux, can Windows key do anything?

Does anybody use the Windows key on Linux? I found many threads complaining that Ubuntu doesn't support it, but no solutions.

It would be useful if the key could be trained to bring up the Mint menu, which is my favorite Start menu of all time. Viz:

My favorite keyboard lacks the Windows key, because it is quite old. I like it because the key feel is good, allowing me to type fast. No other keyboard I've tried has been better since the old Sun Microsystems keyboards. So I seldom remember to use the Windows key when the keyboard has it. But I can be retrained.

Interestingly, on Windows 8 the key becomes mandatory.
