OK I'll say it. The closer you are to the correct exposure, the wider the range of tones you have to work with. It's easy to get rid of or reduce what you have but difficult to put in what you do not have. It's very important when only shooting with JPGs. You have more leway with RAW and in 16 bit mode. Simple as that!
